His work spans field research, teaching and public scholarship, bringing an academic perspective to Anthropogeos’ exploration of people, culture and the places they inhabit.
Academic Career
Dimitri holds a PhD in History, awarded in 2000, and is Head of the Department of Russian Ethnography at the Russian Museum of Ethnography. He also lectures at Saint Petersburg State University, the Rimsky-Korsakov Saint Petersburg State Conservatory and the Saint Petersburg University of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Alongside his teaching and research, Dimitri is the author of academic articles, monographs and works written for a wider readership. He has also curated exhibitions that bring ethnographic research into dialogue with material culture and lived experience.
This experience informs his work with Anthropogeos, where his academic expertise provides a broader ethnographic and historical framework for observations made through field research.
The Gobi Desert
Dimitri contributed anthropological observations to The Gobi Desert: A Place Beyond Time, a project that developed from an Anthropogeos expedition to the Gobi Desert in 2011. The project brought his observations into dialogue with Christian Gottet’s photography, combining ethnographic interpretation and visual documentation to create an account of the desert and the lives connected to it.
His contribution reflects his wider role within Anthropogeos: connecting field observation with academic research to deepen the understanding of people, culture and place.
